4NCL

About the League

The 4NCL (Four Nations Chess League) is the strongest adult chess league in the country and in fact the world. It takes place across 5 weekends a year at hotels in the Midlands. Currently we have 1 team in Division 3s, and 3 teams in Division 4 performing beyond expectations. My dream is to get a Barnet Knights team into Division 1. Division 1 teams have Grandmasters and International Masters in every team. This means for us to achieve this that a number of our players will have risen to this level already. This is a long term goal and may take 10 years to achieve.

Requirements to Play

  • If you are below 18, then you must be a current member of Barnet Knights Chess Club
  • If you are over 18, then you must have been a member of Barnet Knights below the age of 18. (This is designed to keep the team together when they are too old to attend the junior club. My vision is of building lifetime friends who get together for the 4NCL as the children become adults.)
  • If you are a chess coach or parent of a child in the club
  • You must be rated over 1450

Current season 2025/2026

In the 1st round of the prestigious ‘Over the Board’ 4NCL, The Barnet Knights A-, B- and C- teams were competing far away from home, in Dudley. The D- team took part a couple of weekends earlier.

It proved a difficult weekend for the A- and C- teams, but a good weekend for the B- and D- teams.

1) The A-team lost both matches 4.5-3.5 in Division 1, and were unlucky in both matches.
2) The B-team – despite being one of the lowest rated in Division 2, with an average rating of 2105 – managed to win both matches.
3) The C-team – vastly outgunned in both matches in Division 3 – lost both, though the 2nd match was only 3.5-2.5, with great performances from Murat (Board 1) and George (Board 2), who both remained unbeaten over the weekend, despite facing much stronger opposition.
4) The 4th team – who normally struggle in Division 4 – got off to a great start with a win and a draw.

We had a wonderful team meal in a really nice Italian restaurant, with many generations of BK players.

We now move to the next round in January. This last weekend has proved that we need to be stronger on all teams!
